چکیده
Abstract The distribution, density and percentage contribution of pack ice seals during ship-board censuses in the marginal sea zone beyond Lazarev Sea spring 2019 are presented. Adult/juvenile crabeater ( n = 19), leopard 3) Ross 10) were sighted 582.2 nm along ship’s track line area bounded by 00°00’–22°E 56°–60°S. Antarctic fur 21) only encountered on outer fringes ice, Weddell absent due to their primary use fast inner habitats close coast. Crabeater seal sightings included juveniles 2) another four groups 2–3 unclassified seals, singletons 5), single mothers with pups a family group 1 triad). Only one attended pup, while no located. survey was likely insufficient effort, both extent (north 60°S) duration (18 days), locate considerable numbers this early (late October/early November) austral breeding season.

Satellite observations of Antarctic sea ice thickness and volume
We utilize satellite laser altimetry data from ICESat combined with passive microwave measurements to analyze basin-wide changes in Antarctic sea ice thickness and volume over a 5 year period from 2003-2008. Sea ice thickness exhibits a small negative trend while area increases in the summer and fall balanced losses in thickness leading to small overall volume changes. Using a five year time-se...
متن کاملSatellite Microwave Radar Observations of Antarctic Sea Ice
Since 1991, the European Space Agency’s two ERS satellites have acquired microwave radar data of Antarctica. ERS data have been recorded by two receiving stations, one German, one Japanese. The former has allowed direct downlink and recording of high bit-rate, high resolution SAR image data of the Weddell and Bellingshausen Seas during station campaigns. The latter has enabled some data from th...
متن کاملSnow on Antarctic Sea Ice
Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air-sea-ice interaction processes and the Earth’s climate system. Using data collected mostly during the past 10 years, this paper reviews the following topics: snow thickness and snow type and their geographical and seasonal variations; snow grain size, density, and salinity; frequency of occurrence of slush; thermal conduct...
متن کاملHigh-frequency observations of pH under Antarctic sea ice in the southern Ross Sea
Although predictions suggest that ocean acidification will significantly impact polar oceans within 20–30 years, there is limited information regarding present-day pH dynamics of the Southern Ocean. Here, we present novel high-frequency observations of pH collected during spring of 2010 using SeaFET pH sensors at three locations under fast sea ice in the southern Ross Sea. During these deployme...
